The Horton Family are making silage the easy way
The Horton Family, who operate Bell River Hay and their family farm in NSW, have a passion for agriculture. Always looking for ways to improve productivity and efficiency, they believe that attention to detail, along with using moisture meters and modern gear, and treating clients’ silage as if it were their own are the keys to creating good quality hay and silage.
Michael Horton, who runs Bell River Hay along with his wife, Row, and father, Ian, says they first used SilageKing to ensure a quality product was produced when their client’s canola crops failed in 2018.
Michael, a qualified agronomist, explains, “Initially we liked that if you didn’t use the whole drum of SilageKing in one go there is no wastage. We also found when we used it on rank digit grass silage and drought-affected canola we turned an average product into a more palatable and nutritional product.”
Biostart Forage Preservative Sales Manager, Nick Smyth agrees, “When choosing your silage preservative, reliable results come first. Good quality silage retains a high level of nutrition and a low level of spoilage and feeds more stock. Biostart also developed SilageKing with ease of use in mind, which is a real bonus. It can be stored at room temperature, applied straight from the can with no dilution, and the opened cans remain viable when work resumes after breaks.”
